In the spring of 2025 Redwings was alerted to a horse that was in a terrible situation in Southern California.
The horse was a beautiful 15-year-old Quarter Horse stallion that was once a lovely riding horse but the owner had fallen on hard times and the horse was now in a horrible state. The horse was extremely thin, a body score of 2, and he was locked in a small dark pen with no other horses around. The paddock was filled with old feces and urine and smelled horrible.
When the owner was confronted about the condition of the horse he stated that sometimes they forgot to feed him, other times they ran out of hay. How can you just forget to feed the horse that lives right behind your home? The owner then said that the property was being foreclosed on and that he was going to take the horse to an auction that Saturday. We knew that we had to act quickly, but our quarantine facility was already full with 3 other rescues that were sick. In this horse's condition he could not be exposed to the other horses in our quarantine facility.
Thankfully a supporter and past board member was able to jump in and offer to help us. She generously offered to keep him until we were ready to have him transported to the sanctuary. He stayed with our supporter for 4 weeks before he was ready for the 4 hour drive to Redwings. Our supporter named him Handsome, and the name fits him perfectly.
Handsome has already gained a lot of weight and is feeling much better. He is now strong enough to handle surgery and will be castrated in the coming weeks. We hope that once Handsome is fully rehabilitated that we can find him a forever home.
